The Artist: Will A.K.

Will is short for Willhelm Ardylles Kurniawan or willak.eth for his collectoors. An Indonesian autodidact who basically lives on a highway of superflat aesthetics, fiction-as-life, and absurdist vibes. Will pulls from the superflat tradition but makes it way messier—less polished, more personal. The dude’s whole thing is turning the banal into a caricature of itself, so it loops back into feeling meaningful again (maybe).

Will's 1 of 1s are a ride of wild colors and deceptively "flat" visuals that feel layered AF when you actually look deeper. The fiction-vs-reality thing isn’t subtle...and that’s the point. He’s like, “what if life is a cartoon and we’re all NPCs?” ...which is a funny way to deal with postmodern despair tbh. If Will is trying to say anything, it’s probably that absurdity doesn’t cancel meaning—it just makes the search for it weirder, which kinda slaps.

A Specific Artwork: Two Figures

Two Figures is more roughed up with the polish giving way to burnished edges and buffed away surfaces. Minted in January 2023 as one of 5 works in the 'Flat No More' collection. The green grass is given a degree of depth that his previous superflat thinking had denied. There is a dance of sorts between the two central characters in 'Two Figures'. On the left perhaps an invitation...and the right perhaps a moment to consider said invitation... all while a row of NPC cartoons watch on from the edge of the yellow stage.
